Matte Black Conversion

You need to hold down the Menu button to enter SelecType mode. Don't hold it down for too long as it goes into cleaning mode :s

The changeover has taken approx 15 minutes. The process generally goes like:

- Execute the 'BK INK CHANGE' via the Menu.
- Toggle levers & remove all four carts on the left side,
- Insert dummy yellow, magenta and cyan to cap those while black line is drained.
- Printer then drains black line.
- Reinsert four left carts, including matte black

(there's a few levers up and down in the above)

- The printer then goes through what looks to be a full charging cycle with the same raising and lowering of levers on both sides of the printer. Maybe it is only actually charging the left side this time. I don't know.

- The maintainence tray is frothing with ink, not all of which is black.

I spoke to Epson tech afterwards. They're not sure as of now how much ink is used during the ink charge that follows the Black ink swap. The techs only received their 4800 today.

The change over process took longer than I expected, mainly due to the charge cycle at the end which you do need to baby sit as it requires levers up and down several times as instructed. The ink changeover process though is much clearer in practice vs the Help files. The directions on the LCD screen are very easy to follow.

What was the hit on the ink carts (as a rough percentage)? Thanks.

Stephen now you have the printer you can try it out yourself! :)

Seriously though - I haven't looked too closely, was tight for time this afternoon. It would be nice if the ink level graph in the driver showed finer detail. I'll post a screen capture that at least shows the matt black drop after charging.

Now that I think of it I should've done a before and after screen capture of ink levels - next time!

Hey, I thought you were volunteering to be the guinea pig. From the sound of it, even the local Epson guys are saving their ink.

If you do a nozzle check, it shows "Cur.InkCount" and "Pre.InkCount". Mine says 333.4ml for both after 4 prints which kinda correlates to the remaining ink displays (42% if you do the sums). On my Mac you don't even see the graduations. I guess someone figured that Mac users couldn't be bothered with such technical details :-).

Thanks Stephen, dug around for something like that and couldn't find it. Will check it out and keep it in mind for the next black ink swap - but I may be printing with Matte Black for some time :)

"42% if you do the sums"

Or 38% if you do the sums CORRECTLY. So to clarify, after the initial priming and a few prints to make sure everything is working OK, I'm down to just over 60% left (for 110ml carts). I've been told that what's left will last a while. At least it's better than my daughter's Epson 890 where it goes through a cartridge pair just to clear the nozzles.
