Rag Profile

I've been catching up on work while waiting for Rag profile. I'm hoping to receive it in the next day or two. It's also been great to get out with the camera!

I've added an image to the black ink changeover post, taken just after the conversion. It may be some time before I swap back to Photo Black, but when I do I'll definitely be trying the alternative method.

Hi Pete,
My initial cartridge of Photo black is running low and I was wondering what would happen, when it runs out I replace it with the Matt black without the changeover procedure.
1. Would it let me do it
2. How much old ink is left in the pipings to be flushed out
3. Maybe a modified South african changeover could work
Any comments?
Regards Volker

Volker, sounds like a great thing to check out. No idea what it would do - you'd expect it would be ideal if you could time your black ink conversions with when the black ran out.

It'd be interesting to see if the printer is happy to only do a charge and leave it up to you to print black to clear out the photo black in the line, or whether it stops/warns you when the matte black is inserted.

Can you let us know when you've done it?

Hi Pete, most likely I will find out sometime next week. I will just replace the Photo blck with the matt and see what happens. I think printing a sheet of black, as in the South African method, sounds reasonable. I will let you know the outcome.
I hope the cartridges with the printer were not full 110ml, I haven't printed that much and the Light magenta is already empty and as I said the blck seems to be at the end also.
Cheers

I have just bought the 4800 and Colorbyte's RIP, ImagePrint. They say they are working on profiles that will allow both the photo and matte black inks to be used at the same time. A modified matte black cartridge would be used in the light light black space.
Many questions still remain unanswered, like what this does to the Epson warranty, who will supply the cartridge with the modified chip or can you buy the chip and install it yourself.

Best

Michael

Michael I think it will be interesting to see how the ColorByte black solution works out. It's taken them a while - so I guess either they are just busy or the demand for such a solution isn't that great, or it's a complex thing to solve... or who knows. I wonder about warranty too, Epson have no sense of humor when it comes to that.... and I'd want to see the results with my own eyes to see if anything is lost/gained with their approach. But really, I don't have a need - I'm more than happy printing on matte papers... generally I've never really liked the look of inkjet prints on semigloss, gloss etc.
