4800 Print Improvements
A few people have emailed asking for more information/examples regarding improvements in 4800 prints vs the 2100 (or generally the older series of printers).I've printed the image to the left again tonight so have included it here (not a scan, just an example). The area roughly indicated by the red rectangle is so much cleaner in the 4800 print vs the print made on the 2100 using a custom profile. It's almost as if that part of the image is printed from a different (and much better processed!) file.
It's difficult to convey online using images. I guess one way to describe my general experience with the 4800 is that problem images on the 2100 that never looked quite right are no longer problem images on the 4800, and images that looked great printed on the 2100 still do on the 4800.

I agree with your feelings. Prints from the 2100 are great. Viewed side by side prints from the 4800 are cleaner / brighter but viewed separately both prints are fine.
FWIW I have just printed images on the 4800 that I have had printed on a Durst Lamda. Epson wins hands down. Sharper and more detailed prints.

I agree re the Lambda output. For me there's no reason to revisit that route. A run of poor output from a lab running a Lambda along with the cost and turn around time lead me to get the 2100. Never looked back - just like in the darkroom, can't beat printing your own images yourself.
Agree about the 2100 prints too. It's been a great printer for me, prints produced with it have looked good (and still do) and sold well. I'm not sure what I'll do with the 2100 now - maybe experiment a little since I've got a stock of ink left.

I would like to know if the 4800 can print BO (one black ink) on anything other than "plain paper".
Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott, I'm assuming you're referring to the Black output option correct? I messed around a little with that - using matte black ink and setting the Color mode to Black in the driver a wide range of paper options remain available, only the three Epson fine art papers are unavailable.

Pete,
Thanks for the fast reply.
A gentleman sent me a "screenshot" of the paper options avalible with the PK and "black" option "checked".
All the papers are avalible, including the 3 "fine art" papers.
Can you confirm this?
(I would post that screenshot here, but I don't think this fourm will let me.)
Thanks again Pete,
Scott

Have you (or anyone else) printed on Canson Canvas with Photo Black? I'm one of the unfortunates who swaps between Premium Semigloss and Fine Art papers quite often. Have been using Magic Canvas from Intelicoat with Photo Black quite successfully (but not perfect though)
Can you recommend a supplier of papers and canvas who will ship across the Tasman. Material choices here are almost non existant.
Cheers,
Derek.

Hi Scott, I should've paid more attention to the media options when I was playing around with the Black mode with PK installed - that was a while ago now. I'll be running MK for a while yet.

Hi Derek, I've only used the Matte Black on Canson Canvas. Happy with the results - the harder part for me is finding the 'right' set of images that work well on canvas.
Re supplier, I buy Rag and Canvas from Jeremy at Imagescience in Melbourne.

Hi
Jeremy from Image Science here. I haven't used Photo Black with Canson Canvas but I can't see a big problem with it, I've tried it with completely dye based inksets (e.g. the Epson 1290) and it works very well indeed. Cheapest way to try would be a Canson sample pack or just give me a call on (03) 9348 9808 and I can supply you with some A3 sheets ($7.50 each).
We ship paper to Tassie all the time. We're also able to send to NZ, although paper is heavy and freight can be a bit of a killer.

I've yet to find a canvas anywhere near the Canson Canvas quality...kind of like Photo Rag you just find yourself wanting to print all sorts of images on it to see how good they can look!
