Thanks to Alex in Raleigh, NC for emailing info he received from Epson regarding the 5.53 driver update:

Also, apparently Epson recommend that you only install drivers and firmware that are released in your specific sales region. I can't recall ever seeing that stated on an Epson site, and in today's small internet world it doesn't seem to make sense - when a new driver for the 4800 is released on an Epson site you'd assume it will work ok with your 4800 (language excepted).
