Photoshop has a very cool feature - you can Control+Click a layer to load the pixel contents as an active selection. We'll use that here plus a few other tricks.
- Make the 'emboss' layer active
- Choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set to 4 pixels
- Choose Filter > Stylize > Emboss. Set the filter to 150 degrees, 7 pixels high and 150%
- Duplicate the 'emboss' layer and rename it 'cutout'
- Control+Click the 'thick' layer - it doesn't need to be active or visible.
- Choose Select > Inverse and press Delete
Look at the layers palette. Even though the image looks the same you have trimmed the 'cutout' layer using 'thick' as a mask. Now we need to offset the highlights and shadows..
- Make the 'emboss' layer active
- Choose Image > Adjust > Invert
Voila! How easy is that and now you have complete freedom to apply colour and texture to each component. |
